How would you like to live in a very beautiful part of the country, with pristine beaches and clean azure-blue sea? Eucalyptus forests abound here, valleys and a good golf course is located alongside the ocean.

This "community style settlement" would ensure that you could:
• live out your life in your own home, comfortable in your environment;
• each cottage will supply solar heating and energy for its owners;
• 19 homes on-site;
• Each home to cost about $300 000;
• owner of each cottage rosters themselves on weekly to ensure efficient functioning (this could avoid expensive body corporate fees);
• tend to vegetables, fruit trees, chooks (for eggs);
• water tanks;
• seasonal fishlings;
• self-fulfilling, affordable and sustainably thriving. The fish (and bacteria) and plants help each other out and thrive together. With aquaponics, fish grow and live in a tank until they are ready to be harvested. As the fish grow they produce waste. The waste is in the form of ammonia. The way this works is that:
- The ‘waste’ water is pumped to a ‘grow bed’ — a container filled with rocks or other medium. Plants and vegetables are planted in to the grow beds.
- Microscopic bacteria live on the rocks and convert ammonia in the waste water to Nitrites, which in turn is converted to Nitrates. Nitrate is a key nutrient required for plant growth.
- Water and nutrients are regularly delivered to the roots so plants grow big, strong and healthy.
- Water drains back to the fish tank, stripped of nutrients.
- At this point it is again clean and fresh.
